I’m curious whether they can even cover shipping them for that.

I’m still subscribed to Road&Track. They show up at my parents’. I haven’t lived there for almost ten  years. So like every six months or so I find myself with a stack. Don't know if  I've even opened one though for a couple years...

Some questions are better left unanswered ... (the shipping, that is. How stuff keeps appearing at the parent’s home, well, I don’t know about that either, but I know at previous offices we had all sorts of free subscriptions for years and years, probably to get ads in front of those in the (non-existent) waiting areas.

I actually have a subscription to C&D that my wife got for me through a similar deal. I don’t devour them like I did in the old days but it has a certain old school charm.

Only time i ever read a car magazine is usally at the barber shop, or if one sneaks it’s way into the dentist office, right behind the highlights.

Seems like shipping for bulk magazines is hard to calculate, but it looks like it might be around $0.25 per magazine? Which yeah, means they’d be breaking even on postage, but that’s before you even take into account their own handling costs. They might be able to get that cheaper by shipping from closer to the recipient, and they may be able to use their size as a large publisher to negotiate better rates, but they can’t be making much, if any money. And as a 4-year deal, they’d have to wait a long time to jack up rates and hope you are too lazy to cancel. Who even knows if there will still be a print Car and Driver in 4 years.

There’s all sorts of weird USPS voodoo you can work with monthly publications.

O ccasionally: Import Tuner, Super Street, etc to stay up on that side of things.

I get The New Yorker, because when it shows up at my door I feel obligated to flip through it and I inevitably find something interesting - the writing is always excellent. I also sit looking at a screen a large part of my day, so I like having a book or magazine to read in bed that doesn’t involve electronics or a screen.

Not as of last week. Canada slapped a retaliatory tariff on bourbon, soups, and car magazines.

You’ll have to scan the dark web for PDF copies of R&T .

Thank god they haven’t figured out how to slap tariffs on internet communications.

Magazines don’t make money on subscriptions, they make their money from the ads. With more subscri bers, they make more from the ads and come out ahead, even if they break even on the cost to mail it .

Stuff keeps appearing in parents home because I forget to cancel it, and when I do remember I immediately get distracted cause ultimately I don’t care all that much. I think it’s about $15/year, shows up on my credit card and it takes me a bit to figure out what the he ll it was.
